Finally today I managed to find how using Linphone I can use SmartVoip SIP details and make calls. In this article I'll mention how to configure Linphone to use your SmartVoip account details on Ubuntu 9.10 a.k.a "Karmic Koala" with a hope that it will help some poor soul like me who is looking for really easy to configure softphone to use SmartVoip on Ubuntu. So here it goes...
- Get Linphone. Either download it from http://www.linphone.org/ OR use Ubuntu Software Center to download and install it easily.
- Once installed open Linphone...
- Open preferences from Linphone menu, select "Manage SIP Accounts" and click Add button
- In above "Configure a SIP account" enter information of your SmartVoip account as below...
- Your SIP identity: sip:<SmartVoip UserName>@smartvoip.com. Replace <SmartVoip UserName> with your SmartVoip user name.
- SIP Proxy address: sip:sip.smartvoip.com
- Leave rest of the fields as is and click Ok.
- Your SmartVoip SIP details are now configured with Linphone.
Now you can start making calls to other SIP phone or call to any mobile or land line number using your SmartVoip account.
Cheers !!!
- Jay

thanks man.. thanks aton
ReplyDeleteHi Jai
ReplyDeleteThis was really helpful. I got my linphone working and now I can make voip calls from ubuntu.
Neeraj Maheshwari
Glad that it helped
ReplyDeleteCheers !!!
- Jay
Thank you very much... i was looking for this from long time
ReplyDeleteManish
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI'm getting
"Registration on sip:sip.smartvoip.com failed: no response timeout"
Please help..
@ Anonymous "Registration on sip:sip.smartvoip.com failed: no response timeout" is mostly because you are behind firewall. Any softphone needs a static IP instead dynamic. Please try with providing your proxy details or using STUN server. May be it will work.
ReplyDeleteCheers !!!
- Jay
Thanks a lot. Your instructions worked like a charm :-)
ReplyDeleteI have additionally selected the Behind NAT/Firewall (Use STUN to resolve) option by entering stun.smartvoip.com:3478. The same is given in the smartvoip website: http://www.smartvoip.com/en/sipp.html near the end.
ReplyDeleteAshish, glad it helped. Using NAT/Firewall option, was your linphone able to register even if you connect to internet using proxy?
ReplyDeleteHey Buddy... thanks for info , i also tried it with Twinkle and works great ... You just go to Ubuntu software centre and install Twinkle ... Twinkle has many more features than linphone
ReplyDelete@ Manish, Thanks for the comments. I'll go throug Twinkle. Does Twinkle work if you are using proxy with authentication to connect to internet?
ReplyDeletethank you very much Jay !! this is really very helpful. It saved me the trouble of installing windows just to be able to use smartvoip. !!!
ReplyDeleteBtw...I tried to configure smartvoip with Ekiga as well, but it seems not to work. Did you find a solution to this one as well? Let us know.
Thanks again !
Cheers
Tried Ekiga initially, but without any success. And if I'm not wrong, with Ubuntu 9.04 or 10.04, its not supported also. I might be wrong here, but bottom line is no success with Ekiga.
ReplyDeleteThere is also another good SIP client - Twinkle. You can explore that too
btw...I have a problem now. My smartvoip username contains an @ character i.e my smartvoip username is : name.lastname@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI have to register in Linphone as name.lastname@gmail.com@smartvoip.com - which does not work. I read in some other blog that using quotes might work [i.e. 'name.lastname@gmail.com'@smartvoip.com]. It didnt. Do you know a workaround to this problem Jay? It would be really helpful. else I have to create a new account and lose my money in my old account :(
Or if you know any other SIP client which takes this username please let me know. Cheers :)
dude, never face any such problem or aware of. Thankfully I dont have my email address as my username. You can give it a try with Twinkle or u can even try to contact smartvoip customer care, describe ur problem and either ask them to change ur userid or transfer ur remaining balance to new account u create. All the best.
ReplyDeleteLet me know if you can find any such softphone which allows to configure such usernames
Cheers !!!
- Jay
Hi...my username with an @ character works with Twinkle. Thanx :)
ReplyDeleteWell everything has a solution...With Twinkle I can :) Thank you :)
ReplyDeleteHey Jay, Thanks a lot for the post.
ReplyDeleteI have been a windows guy for a long time and just started moving towards Ubuntu. Was finding ways for a complete shift, and your post has put me a step ahead in the process. Thanks again!
kiran
@ kiran glad that it helped.
ReplyDeletewhen i try to register with smartvoip for the first time i get the error 'sorry we could not register you due to a connection failure ................' but my internet is working. what should i do?
ReplyDeleteare you behind proxy/firewall then you might need to provide those details...
ReplyDeleteCheers !!!
- Jay
You are the man, Jay! You made by day with your article. Thanks!
ReplyDeletecan we add phone number, i don't think so, please help me by posting screen shots. I am novice user
ReplyDeleteadd phone number? you mean as in contact list? just dial the number you want to and then you can add it to your contact list. If you wist to *register* your number so that when you call another party sees your number instead of unknown or some weird number then its not possible with linphone, at least I dont know
ReplyDeleteI could not able to connect my smartvoip account to SIP. One more thing.. There is no column for our smart voip password.
ReplyDeletepassword will be asked once you configure as mentioned in the post and you start the Linphone
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, the crappy smartvoip software sadly freezes my windows installation when i try to run it and there was no ubuntu alternative. But this works well.
ReplyDeleteHi Jay, I am using ubuntu 10.04 on an HP laptop. I did all that you have specified, still I couldn't get it working. Is there any thing like firewall blocking? Thanks in advance.
ReplyDeleteArun.
Hi Jay, I am on ubuntu 10.04, running on an HP laptop. I did all that you have specified, still it is not working. Is there anything like firewall blocking? thanks in advance.
ReplyDeleteArun.
Hi Jay, I am on ubuntu 10.04, running on an HP laptop. I did all that you have specified. Still, I couldn't get it working. Thanks in advance,
ReplyDeleteArun.
@ Arun, I'm sorry I've no idea what might be going wrong. Not sure of firewall, but if you are behind proxy, then it might be issue. For firewall just check the required port by Linphone is open
ReplyDeleteThanks Jay. I am not behind proxy. Could please tell me how to check whether the port is open or not? Thanks again,
ReplyDeleteArun.
thanks so much.. works greatly... but i can't see the balance amount of smartvoip in the app. Any way to get this.??
ReplyDeleteNope there is no way to see balance amount from other SIP clients like linphone. Only if smartvoip comes with its own client like they have for windows, you can see the balance. For now, only way is logon to smartvoip account on smartvoip site and check the balance
ReplyDeleteas the given details about linphone, i have install the linphone in ubuntu.but i could not make call.i am wonder how to open my account for smartvoip like windows working?so plse help me .......avijit
ReplyDelete@ avjit, If you dont have smartvoip account, you first have to create it by going to smartvoip.com. Once your account is created successfully, you need to use your smartvoip credentials to configure your linphone.
ReplyDeletei am using fedora 14.i have installed linphone as mentioned blog in my sony vaio.when i want to open linphon, it not asking user account password and when i want make call after some time it was showing "Registration on sip:sip.smartvoip.com failed:no response timeout"......so i could not understood what is the problem.please help me.....thanks....suraj
ReplyDeletei am using sony vaio laptop (E series VPCEA43EG) windows7 home basic. From last tree days i could not create account smartvoip in my lappy. It is always showing ""Sorry.due to an unknown error your registration request was denied"".every possibility i have done even i temporaly stop the all firewall.but still showing the same problem. Please help me
ReplyDeletedeepak
@ Suraj, are you behind proxy? If so that might be the reason. Not sure how to set the proxy or even worse proxy with authentication with linphone.
ReplyDelete@ deepak, not sure why that is happening on windows and with smartvoip native win client. have you tried to register using their website? if that also fails, its better to contact their support group
there is no menu in linphone
ReplyDeleteGurdip, not sure which version of Linphone you are using or which Ubutnu you are on.. if you dont see that menu option, I'm sure there must be some other similar option... just fiddle around with linphone a bit and you should get it. best luck
ReplyDeleteCool u solved a long standing prob here ;)
ReplyDeletethanks a lot
jay, i have installed linphone on ubuntu, i must admit, i am very new on ubuntu, i dont see this preferences option for linphone, its user interface is lot different from the one in the screenshot without any options
ReplyDeleteVidya, I agree it must have changed since I wrote this entry in 2010. Did you check the linphone site for help/screenshots? That might help you. I'm currently not on Ubuntu so cant test this for you, but general idea remains same, just look for the preferences in linphone and find the SIP settings section and you should be able to make it out. All the best
ReplyDeletehi jay,
ReplyDeletethank you for your thoughtful post. I am new to ubuntu and i tried installing linphone to use smartvoip, but the moment i click on th application it does not open. it appears and vanishes within a second. i dont know how to fix this. could you please comment on this.
thanks,
vignesh
Vignesh, Do you have webcam on your machine? I've heard similar issue where machine dont have webcam. Go through this thread and that might help you https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linphone/+bug/380596
Deletethanks..but I'm not able to make calls...when I dialing, tere is no sound & after a whilw call eneded....
ReplyDeleteMay be something to do with your sound card !!!!
DeleteThanks a lot !!!! it worked :)
ReplyDeleteGlad that it helped you.
DeleteHi i want to use smartvoip in ubuntu. I installed linphone i can login my smart voip account
ReplyDeleteusing liphone in ubuntu. But when i am trying to call i hear no sound at all. After some time it says that could not connect destination. my internet setting is direct connection to internet.
Could you please help me out here
thanks alot
Sunil
Sunil, I'm sorry, but I've no idea on the problem you mentioned. Only thing I can suggest is to check if the ports used by linphone is open (wild guess)
Deletethank Jay I am still struggling to fix this problem.
ReplyDeleteregistration on sip:sip.linphone.org failed: no response timeout
ReplyDeletei tried the above solution by using STUN but still this problem is not solved can anyone let me know the solution for this ....mine is windows system....
For windows system why dont you use the dedicated windows client for smartvoip? its better then this linphone solution
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI use actionvoip, do u think it would work in the same manner...
Yes it should. SmartVoip, ActionVoip, Jumblo are all same, just different names/companies for their financials
